Start with the member workflow, not the course builder. A polished academy is useful, but it will not fix messy rules for member-only access, non-member pricing, chapters, committees, or corporate partner accounts.
Do the CE and certificate checks early. Many LMSs can issue certificates, but associations often need credits, expiries, renewals, transcripts, audit history, and reports that match accreditation rules.
Confirm the AMS or CRM sync before you buy. Native integration is ideal, but API, Zapier, middleware, or custom work may be enough if ownership of member data is clear.
Model the real learner count. Associations often have thousands of members and a smaller active training audience, so monthly active users, active learners, seats, and registered users can price very differently.
Check the commerce details, not just whether it has checkout. Look for bundles, subscriptions, catalogue access, coupons, refunds, tax handling, gateway fees, invoices, and member versus non-member pricing.
Separate engagement from compliance. Communities, cohorts, and discussions help retention, but they do not replace solid reporting, certificate records, and admin controls for regulated education.
